****About Harpenden Bowling Club****
Harpenden Bowling Club, founded in 1908 as an outdoor lawn bowls club, is one of the town’s unsung treasures. It is hidden away behind the charming houses in Spenser Road off Milton Road. The playing membership has remained steady year on year at around 140, one of the largest and most successful Bowling Clubs in Hertfordshire.
It is the club's focus on ensuring that players of all abilities and ages are welcomed that has ensured the club has thrived throughout its history and is still going strong today. Unlike many other sports, the bowls philosophy is to encourage everyone to attain a good standard of skill so they can enjoy playing in a friendly and sporting atmosphere at a level which suits them. Players, including those completely new to the sport, often take part in friendly matches in their first season before going on to playing more competitively in Club and other competitions. Coaching from our team of six qualified coaches give help and assistance to all members particularly in their first year.
You can play and practice at any time during the week. Just book yourself a rink online to come and play when you want. There is nothing further to pay other than your annual subscription. You will soon meet and play with other members doing the same. Club organised social bowling sessions are held every Friday and are great for getting to know your fellow members and gain experience. If you want to go on and compete there are lots of options for you to get the most out of bowling as a sport.
Our facilities are impressive. The Clubhouse, built in 2001, is the perfect place to make new friends in Harpenden. The social side of the club is an essential part of the club's success and is enjoyed by all members. Although our bowling season runs from just April to September, our events program runs all through the year. Out of season our social program includes monthly entertainment events, coffee mornings and club indoor games nights. Additionally we still bowl through the closed season using the Clubhouse for Short Mat Bowling (another form of social and competitive bowling).
The Clubhouse with our fine green make us an outstanding bowling club offering an unparalled bowling experience at any level from beginner to County standard. New friends are quickly and easily made as your games whether casual or competitive are invariably concluded with a convivial drink at the Clubhouse bar afterwards.
The club is justifiably proud of its many successes in St. Albans District, Herts County, London & Southern Counties and National competitions. Competitive bowlers of all ages find plenty of opportunity to take part in exciting games and to represent Harpenden across the region.
