Welcome to the Christmas 2025 Season
On Sunday 17th December the Club held it’s annual Carol concert with the Salvation Army leading the singing with their superb Band. We sang our hearts out for an hour singing the traditional favourites and some modern lively carols. Accompanied by mulled wine and mince pies this remains one of the most popular social events the Club puts on.
As usual our members were as generous as ever and Club President Ian Thomas was able to pass over a donation of over £300 to the Salvation Army to help with the tremendous work it does, particularly at this time of year.

Two days of great bowling heralded the end of our 2025 outdoor Club activities.
Our 2025 Club Finals didn’t disappoint as we enjoyed two days of competitive bowling. We only had one afternoon of rain that held us up for a short period on Saturday. As luck would have it, our original diary entry for our second day of Finals would have been a wash out if it wasn’t for other Club commitments ensuing that we had to move the original final’s days forward.
This year, we had several finalists who produced very good play and who have only been members for a few years. Using his wide experience, our Club Competition Secretary, Tony Redford ensured that all events were played as planned or were quickly rearranged to allow for adverse weather conditions. As usual our catering team produced an outstanding range of food. All the catering was top class with highlights being a BBQ on Saturday evening and a Sunday buffet of numerous tasty delights. Looking ahead, with an exceptional number of new members joining this year, it bodes well for an exciting 2026 with competitions and Finals.

One of numerous good news stories to mark a great end to our season as its six wins out of seven by Harpenden to secure the 2025 Men’s St Albans and District Bowls Association (SADBA) Club Rink League competition.
A very strong and consistent series of performances ensured Harpenden won the 2025 SADBA Club Rink League competition (known colloquially as the District League). They won six matches out of seven and scored a total of 400 points at an average of 57.14 points per match - the nearest challengers were 60 points behind.

A great end to the outdoor District season! Harpenden make it two wins out of two at the St Albans and District Bowls Association (SADBA) men’s finals
A great end to the outdoor District season! Harpenden make it two wins out of two at the St Albans and District Bowls Association (SADBA) men’s finals
In what is becoming a very successful end of season finish for us, we won two finals at District level, both played at Potters Bar Bowls Club. The club laid on a very friendly and professional reception for the players, supporters and officials, and prepared a beautiful green.
Nick Muir was the first to claim silverware by winning the Champion of Champions trophy when he overcame Brian Smith of Hemel Hempstead with a strong performance 21-6.
Neil Herrington then made it a brace of singles champions by winning the Singles against Philip Russell. After Phil started strongly and got to 4-0, Neil then turned it around by getting to the match mid-point with a strong lead. After retaining his lead for the rest of the match, he finished 21-12.
What a wonderful afternoon: the weather was ideal for playing with the sun moderated, and with a perfect temperature. It proves yet again, that going to a local Hertfordshire venue, enjoying the atmosphere and watching our own members winning is fantastic entertainment with the bonus of tasty, moderately priced snacks and drinks from the hosts - and no TV subscriptions!

Harpenden Victorious at South Area County League Finals.
Harpenden Victorious at South Area County League Finals.
Harpenden's men played Townsend in the semi-final of the South Area County League hosted at Harpenden Bowling Club. Harpenden's Joe Festa, David Brooks, Steve Maynard and skip John Osborn won 17-9 whilst Harpenden's Trevor Tharby, Brendan Madden, Neil Herrington and skip Nick Muir won 17-13 to secure a place in the final against Batchwood who had defeated Welwyn Garden City in the other semi-final.
The final was closely fought across both rinks. Going in to the last end Harpenden led by 5 overall but both skips faced being three down before their final bowls hence in a losing position overall. John Osborn was able to move the jack to cut the deficit and secure an overall win by one shot to win the Maynard trophy. Nick Muir's rink lost 15-16 whilst John Osborn's rink won 16-14. Another tension filled example of how often, just one shot can make a huge difference in bowls. In this case, one shot out of 288 bowls bowled by our two men’s teams in the final.
Harpenden’s County League 2 ladies, (Linda Brooks, Jenny McEvoy, Denise Moores and Viv Dale) successfully played in the Semi Final against Welwyn & District in the morning but lost by 1 shot (another example) against Hatfield in the afternoon, what a disappointment but a big achievement to get this far in a very competitive competition.

Club matches provide contrasting results.
We played two friendly Club Matches in the past week, both away, with contrasting results. At St Albans, Clarence Park we had to reduce the match to three men's Triples owing to lack of availability, but came away with a satisfying win by 51 shots to 42.
The opposite experience came at Datchworth on a blisteringly hot Sunday afternoon when all four of Harpenden's triples lost their matches and the total score was a heavy defeat - 38 to 78.

Harpenden ladies closing in on the District triples Final
After a competitive match a Harpenden ladies team comprising of Viv Dale, Jenny McEvoy and Beryl Driscoll overcame a Potters Bar team to reach the semi-final of the District Triples. They will be playing at Batchwood against either Welwyn and District or Hatfield.
In a busy week for ladies, other matches were:
Tues 5 August: Ladies District League match v St Albans, two rinks at home. A win for Harpenden, 37 – 33.
Wed 6 August: SADLBA Double Rink Harpenden v Potters Bar, two teams of four, one home & one away. Harpenden Home won, Harpenden Away lost, overall total score -3.
Thurs 7 August: A nail biting County League match. Harpenden 1 v Harpenden 2 – both in Division B. Result: a win for Harpenden 1, who go through to the semi-finals on 31 August.
Fri 8 August: Friday District Triples – Home and Away. Harpenden v Townsend. Result: Loss Home and Away.
Harpenden played three friendly inter-Club matches in the past ten days. The first of these involved four mixed triples at Batchwood. The Harpenden team included five “new” bowlers from the 2023 and 2024 intake, but despite this lack of match experience they put up a strong showing, losing the match by 65 shots to 71. The top rink was skipped by Mike Pearson, with Johnny Cheng and Jenny White.
Two days later a strong team played men’s triples against Potters Bar. This match had been postponed from the time of extreme temperatures at the start of July. A definite win for Harpenden of 73-53 shots.
The third match, played today at Welwyn and District, involved three mixed rinks. This was the first rinks match this season. Having only two bowls each rather than three, and given the very fast surface, Harpenden’s players met with a challenging situation. In the event, the overall result was in doubt until the end, but finished as a narrow win for Harpenden by 44 – 42 shots. A major contribution to this score came from the rink skipped by Trevor Tharby, Nigel Taunt, Sandy Bisland and Denise Moores.
A new members evening was arranged for bowlers joining in 2024 and 2025. It started with a match where 20 new bowlers and 10 experienced bowlers played a triples match, Tigers v. Lions, resulting in a draw. After the match everyone mingled, chatted and enjoyed a wonderful spread of nibbles.

NEW CLOCK
Members will be pleased that the Club now have a very smart new clock overlooking the green. Tony accompanied by Jennie pressed the switch to start the clock’s new life with us at 10 o’clock on Friday 18th July.
Tony’s association with the club clock goes back to the very early days of the clubhouse when he was part of the Project Team on the development which transformed the Club from wooden buildings to a purpose built Clubhouse. Tony donated the original clock (which has now been retired to his garden) as his contribution to equipping the new building and with Lyn Roberts has maintained his connection by allowing the Club to be able to afford a slightly larger, smarter clock. It was John Beecham who researched and found the clock maker and persuaded the Committee to go for the larger model.
So many thanks to them.
The Committee
Ps Clocks need adjustment from time to time but please never try to correct the time by moving the hands round – you will damage the mechanism

The Club Triples League got off to a terrific start this evening. Captains Sue Rose and Dave Kilvert took to the green with their fledgling teams with the first match. And what a close fought match it was with all players contributing to a good number of very tight heads. Dave with Tony Caffrey and Keith Armstrong edged ahead in the early ends securing a comfortable lead but slowly in the second half Sue with Johnny Cheng and Richard Powderham came back at them. After a close measure giving them shot, Dave’s team went into the last end with a 3 shot lead. Undaunted, Johnny and Richard handed over to Sue a 2 shot advantage which Sue extended to 4 shots with her first two woods leaving Dave one wood to bowl. Right on the money, Dave took the jack to get shot and the game.
What a way to kick of this competition in which 45 of our 120 odd players are taking part making it the biggest single competition the Club runs. Well done to Alan B for organising the competition with the back up of the Competition Secretary and the Captains.

A unique bowls encounter brings three teams for a historic event
The Centenary Cup established in 2008 is a very unique event that brings together three bowls clubs who were all formed in 1908. Harpenden, Dunstable and Tring played on 28 June to see who would claim the Centenary Cup. Tring came out on top with a score of 159, Harpenden finished with 143 with Dunstable a short distance back on 141.
24 players from each club played either at home or away. Tring, last year’s holders continued their winning run but each club had their moments and the result was close considering 24 players from each club took part; a total of 72 players. In an afternoon of accurate logistics to get the right players to the right club at the right time, everything ran smoothly.

A week of extreme temperature saw two enjoyable Club matches for Harpenden.
In extreme summer heat, a Club match of four mixed triples at King’s Langley finished with a convincing and clear-cut victory by 80-48 shots for Harpenden. Harpenden’s top rink comprised of Cynthia Man, Mike Bird and Men’s Captain Mike Arnold.
The men’s match played at Harpenden on Saturday against Potten End was shortened due to the hot weather.
