HARPENDEN
LADIES UNLUCKY
Harpenden ladies have played exceedingly well to reach the area
final of the Top Club, but in the final they came up against a strong Rosedale team.
Dena Roberts played a superb game in the singles and led 11 - 10 at
halfway, but lost her way in the middle to go 11 - 19 down. However, she made a fine comeback to be 17 -
20 down and was holding two shots on the next end but her opponent, Shirley
Pratchett, played an excellent last wood which, after a close measure, was
declared shot to win the match. The
pairs, Linda Newby and Linda Brooks, made a slow start and were 6 - 14 down
after twelve ends but recovered well, scoring five shots on the 18th end, to
lead 22 - 16 going into the last end. At
one down and with her last wood to come skip Linda Brooks tried to trail the
jack to Harpenden's back woods to score five shots, but was unlucky to knock
out their second wood to go five down, though still winning the match 22 - 21. The fours also made a slow start but got into
top gear on the 11th end, picking up six shots to go ahead 10 - 9. Thereafter, it was tight all the way and
Harpenden were just one shot up at 16 - 15 going into the last end, but were
lying three down with just skip, Lucy Ratcliffe's, last bowl to come. She played a perfect wood to draw shot and
win the match 17 - 15. Unfortunately,
the triples lost heavily 6 - 28 and, although both teams won two matches, Rosedale won the final on shot difference 85 - 62.
