HARPENDEN
OUT OF 2 x 4s
After winning three rounds of the National 2 x 4s, Harpenden men’s
'A' team put up a good fight against Bushey in the area quarter final. The match was very close until the eighteenth
end when Harpenden were ahead by one shot 34 - 33. However, Bushey piled on the pressure in the
last three ends and Harpenden did not score another shot, Bushey winning 42 -
34.
There was a dramatic finish in the ladies County Pairs, Linda
Newby and Linda Brooks (Harpenden) being level with Diane Poletti and Linda
Lambert (Oak Hill) at 15 - 15 after eighteen ends. However, they dropped five shots on the
nineteenth end, but pulled one back on the twentieth to be 16 - 20 going into
the last end. On the last end they were
holding five shots for a match lie with just Lambert's last wood to come, but
she just managed to draw shot to win the match.
In the District League, Harpenden and Potters Bar won two rinks
each, but Potters Bar won the match convincingly by 90 - 62, Harpenden gaining
30 league points to Potters Bar's 50. Harpenden's
top rink: Barrie Hills, Fred Whaley, Rob
Newby and Ted Pentecost 16 - 13.
In a friendly mixed triples away against Bushey, Harpenden lost
43 - 68, but Harpenden's top rink included two new bowlers, Alan Falconer and
