MIXED FORTUNES FOR HARPENDEN LADIES

Harpenden ladies excelled themselves in the third round of the National Top Club away against North Mymms, winning all four disciplines to reach the semi-final.  Dena Roberts made a good start and was 15 - 7 ahead before her opponent started to make a comeback, the match climaxing in the closest possible finish.  When leading 20 - 17 Roberts was four down, her opponent holding a match lie, but she drew second wood with her last bowl to stay in the match.  Two ends later it was 20 - 20 and Roberts was two down with her last wood to come - a real pressure shot, but she put it right on the jack to win the match.  The pairs and fours both started well and were never behind, the pairs winning 22 - 10 and the fours 26 - 8.  The triples had a closer match and were level at 8 - 8 after eleven ends.  Thereafter they moved ahead, eventually winning 17 - 11.
